FRIEDA HUGHES
BORN ENGLAND 1960
WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Frieda has always painted and in 1982 left her employment to paint and write full-time, as well as study at the North Devon College of Art and complete a Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) degree at St Martin's School of Art in London. She has had published six children's books and an adult novel, exhibited solo since 1991 in Mill Valley, California, in London and since then in Sydney. In 1992 Frieda was granted Australian residency on the basis of artistic and literary merit, and in 1994 Australian citizenship.

"Painting comes first with me. After that, writing the children's books and poetry and then the rest.

"Laszlo Lukacs, my fellow artist and partner, was born in Hungary in 1946 and arrived in Australia with his family in 1956. It was inevitable that when I met him recently, he became part of my landscape and, therefore, my subject matter. He has a nose worth having a face for, and a face that is infinitely more interesting than dolerite.

"I enjoy the faces of people in the same way that I enjoy the curiosity and incongruity of elements in my environment, but in the same way that those elements must catch my eye, so must the faces. When they do it is wonderful."
