John studied at the National Art School, Melbourne from 1949 to 1954 gaining the Diploma of Art, worked for a year on ceramic decoration with John Percival, taught painting at Prahran and Caulfield Colleges of Advanced Education and conducted a private art school. He has had thirty-five solo exhibitions since 1956 in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth, including a retrospective exhibition of portraits in 1992, and is represented in public collections including the National Gallery of Victoria, corporate and private collections.
"With this portrait I endeavoured to portray an impression of this unusual Melbourne personality and his cultural presence in our community.
"My sitter's unconventional lifestyle and consistent power of artistic expression has always impressed me deeply. In painting terms he was a very provocative subject.
"The painting is intended to convey an actual moment of performance.
"Although the painting procedure was a very demanding one, the task was assisted by the ongoing friendship that has existed between Adrian and myself since the early fifties.
