NEW SOUTH WALES

At twenty-six, Ralph is amongst a new generation of Australian portraitists. He was first recognised in 1987 when, aged seventeen, he won the National Art Award. Since then he has completed a degree in Fine Arts and Pure Mathematics at Sydney University and studied at the Julian Ashton Art School. He has also received extensive private tuition in oil painting techniques. He has travelled widely throughout Europe and America, studying the works of traditional and contemporary artists.

Ralph's commissioned work includes portraits, still-lives and stained glass windows. He is currently working towards his first solo exhibition.

"In my portraiture I seek to communicate a deeper understanding of the nature of my subjects through the use of vivid and dramatic imagery.

"In Gloves off, I have depicted Tom Uren in a way that represents his passionate convictions as both a politician and a man. The title is a reference not only to Tom's early ambitions as a boxer, but to his fighting spirit in the political arena for issues of social justice that have preoccupied him."
